Re-evaluation cont.

To avoid cliché and the stigma attached to bold claims of re-invention, I decided to start this blog before the New Year- just before…but still before. Rather than re-invention, my 2014 promises re-evaluation and continuation since coming to the realisation that ‘life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful’.

The oldest definition of “perfection”, fairly precise and distinguishing the shades of the concept, goes back to Aristotle. In Book Delta of the Metaphysics, he distinguishes three meanings of the term, or rather three shades of one meaning, but in any case three different concepts. That is perfect:
-which is complete — which contains all the requisite parts;
-which is so good that nothing of the kind could be better;
-which has attained its purpose.

Aristotle’s definition proves that perfection is unattainable: nothing is ever ‘complete’, ‘better’ is always subjective and ‘purpose’ is constantly changing. Still, we let these three ‘shades of meaning’ govern our perception of the world and our lives, so much so that we overlook the good stuff. Before perfection, there is wonder in the everyday and we don’t have to have top grades, the ideal partner, money or a bangin’ body to enjoy where we are now. Realisation.

Up until this point, an obsession with perfection has played a major role in my life. I have been chasing an ideal of completed perfection which can never be achieved because it’s not a fixed point. However, wanting and chasing isn’t all bad, it inspires drive and determination to do, see and achieve; reminiscing on 2013 and 2012 and 2004,5,6 etc. the good, the bad, the ugly and imperfect have helped me reach where I am now and even if it doesn’t always register, it’s a good place to be. Re-evaluation.

Nevertheless, the call of that impossible perfection is too strong to ignore and so this coming year I will keep working steadily towards my personal goals. The dream is to live without insecurities or preoccupations or at least to channel them into something positive. Therefore, with the inauguration of this blog, what I want, I’ll pursue and I’ll share it with you!– That purple dinosaur’s got nothing on me. Right now I’m feeling good, sat here with a big ol’ mug of green tea, looking forward to some hardcore socialising- after some hardcore studying- to greet Twenty Fourteen. Continuation.

So, here’s to realisation, re-evalutation, continuation and paragraphs which echo the lyrical genius of Lil’ Wayne:

P.S. Happy New Year kiddies.
