It has been quite some time since my last expedition but here goes with Fitzbillies. I definitely would have covered this place sooner had I not thought it was already quite well known…apparently it isn’t.
Mon-Thurs: 8.00am – 6.00pm
Fri: 8.00am – 11.30pm
Sat: 10.00am – 11.30pm
Sun: 10.00am – 6.00pm
If you’re currently living in central Cambridge and you haven’t been here, you’re seriously missing out. There are essentially three parts to the business: The shop, an adjoined café next door and a more formal dining area beyond the shop. Despite a fire in the 90’s, this baker’s has maintained both it’s historical shop-front and reputation, the evidence of which lines the walls in the restaurant. The mix of old and new makes it a very pleasant place to spend a few hours chatting with a friend or two over herbal tea and pretentious cereals. Again (as seems to be the trend lately), all the staff are effortlessly cool.
Fitzbillies deals in baked goods which are way above your average cakes, cupcakes and breads but Chelsea buns-which I have yet to try- are supposedly what they do best. I would however recommend the granola without hesitation:
It comes complete with natural yoghurt, apple compote, caramelised nuts and is served all day in both eateries for £4.50 which is pretty much the going rate for a decent bowl of muesli, granola or porridge.
